Three-player squash
How to play squash with three players.
Practical three-player squash formats, including rotations, king of the court, conditioned games and the safety decisions that make them work.
In short
Three people can share a squash court through rotations, feeding exercises, king-of-the-court games and short conditioned matches. There is no single universal three-player rule set, so agree the rotation, scoring, waiting position and safety rules before starting.

Coverage note
Three-player formats are usually social or coaching formats rather than one universal official discipline. The organiser should adapt the activity to the court, players and ability levels.
Three useful formats
| Format | How it works |
|---|---|
| Rotation | Two players rally while the third waits safely, then players rotate after a point or timed interval. |
| King or queen of the court | A player remains on for a short challenge while the others rotate in. Agree how a winner stays on and how long games last. |
| Coach or feeder | One person feeds balls while two players work on movement, targets or returns, then roles change. |
How to run a rotation
- Choose a short interval or number of rallies.
- Keep the waiting player outside the danger area and make the changeover predictable.
- Use a ball that produces a controllable rally.
- Rotate fairly rather than allowing one strong player to dominate every game.
- Stop if players are crossing or swinging without enough space.
Is king of the court official squash?
King of the court is a useful informal game name, not a claim that every venue or governing body uses the same rules. It can mean different things in different clubs. Write down the winning condition, court entry, scoring and rotation before you begin.
Who is it good for?
Three-player squash can be useful when a group has an odd number, when a coach wants to observe and feed, or when players want a lively social session. It can also expose differences in ability, so use handicaps, cooperative targets or different balls where appropriate.
Questions about three-player squash
Frequently asked questions
Can three people play squash on one court?
Yes, through a planned rotation, coaching exercise or informal game. Not all three people should move freely at the same time unless the activity has been specifically designed and checked for safety.
What is king of the court in squash?
It is an informal rotation game in which a player may stay on after winning a short challenge while others rotate in. The exact rules should be agreed by the group.
How do three people play squash fairly?
Use short games or timed rotations, clear waiting positions and a fair order of entry. A bouncier ball or conditioned target can help different abilities share the session.
