Let’s Bounce: Jersey

Outdoor squash in Jersey

An early exploration of whether a programmed outdoor squash offer could support Jersey’s priorities for accessible, inclusive activity while complementing existing facilities. Local need, host, site, funding and delivery are still to be established.

The opportunity

A first rally. A reason to return.

Explore a locally useful way to introduce more people to squash, with welcoming activity and a clear route into regular play.

Shaped by the community

Jersey has an established squash and racketball association and active club programmes. Government priorities include reducing inactivity, inclusive opportunities and better use of existing facilities. This project is at discovery stage; no local organisation has endorsed or partnered with Squash Dog, and no site is proposed publicly.

We want to hear from people who may not already play, alongside existing coaches and clubs. New activity should complement local provision and valued public space.

Local priorities, practical proposals

How squash could contribute

Connect with local priorities

Jersey’s current activity strategy focuses on people who are least active, inclusive opportunities and an updated facility gap analysis. The Government also promotes informal, welcoming places to be active and better use of existing and school facilities. These priorities point to questions for local research; they do not establish that squash is the right activity or that a new court is needed.

Include St Helier in the listening

St Helier’s Parish priorities include an accessible, inclusive capital and stronger neighbourhood connections. Jersey’s Play Plan sets an access benchmark for play space in town. Local participation data for St Helier still needs to be established, so any pilot should be shaped with residents and intended users before choosing a site.

Treat Fort Regent as a planned regeneration

Fort Regent is being regenerated as an all-weather leisure destination that already includes a sport, play and social hub. Any squash idea should first establish whether it complements the published plan and responds to a measured participation gap.

Start with local priorities

JSRC at St Clement has five courts, non-member bookings and established junior, ladies-only, Rusty and corporate pathways. Before proposing more provision, establish who these routes currently reach and whether intended St Helier users can access them.

Recognise public-hire provision in St Brelade

Active Jersey lists two squash courts for hire at Les Quennevais Sports Centre. This is an existing indoor option, although its price, available hours, capacity and accessibility for prospective St Helier participants still need to be checked before drawing conclusions about access.

Build on school and community pathways

Jersey Sport’s 2024 award page reports JSRA delivery in schools and community settings, including La Moye sessions using six squash-specific rebound nets and examples of progression into club activity. A pilot should first ask which existing delivery routes can reach the intended users.

Recognise previous participation funding

Jersey Sport says JSRA received £3,500 in 2025 for junior and inclusive school initiatives. Its page describes a planned two-days-per-week schools programme and more than 500 expected participants; these are aims and expected reach, not verified outcomes or funding for Let’s Bounce.

Distinguish the 2026 coach award

JSRA received £4,500 in 2026 through Jersey Sport’s Sport Workforce Development Award for coach development, qualifications, specialist visits and workshops. This may strengthen local delivery capability, but it is not a court award, Let’s Bounce funding or evidence of project endorsement.

A site needs its own permission and case

Any future public-space option would need the land manager’s agreement, a practical operating plan, technical assessment, inclusive access and confirmed resources. No location, host, approval or funding is confirmed.

Early exploration

The next step is conversation and evidence gathering. The project may change or stop if local priorities, site conditions or operating requirements do not support it.

The discussion so far

Map existing courts and funded local pathways

Research confirms five club courts at St Clement, two courts for hire at Les Quennevais, school outreach using rebound nets and JSRA Jersey Sport awards for participation work and coach development. The discovery now focuses on what current routes reach, where barriers remain and how any pilot could complement them; none of the awards funds or endorses this project.

Jersey exploration opened

We have started an exploratory project to understand local priorities and how outdoor squash might complement existing activity. No site, host, partner, funding or delivery is confirmed.

Help shape the next step

Bring your local knowledge.

Schools, community groups, clubs and businesses can help us understand what people need and how a first activity could work.

You can share feedback, discuss possible involvement, suggest a host or explore sponsorship. An expression of interest helps shape the conversation; it does not commit you or your organisation to a programme.
