A community squash proposal for Cumberland, connecting visible outdoor courts with welcoming activity for women and girls, older adults, young people and disabled people.

The opportunity
A first rally. A reason to return.
Help more people see squash, try a suitable format and find a welcoming reason to return. We propose an outdoor court alongside affordable coached activity, local partnerships and the everyday care that makes a community facility useful.
Shaped by the community
Cumberland’s published priorities bring together Active Wellbeing, age-friendly services, young people’s voices and inclusive access. Let’s Bounce could contribute through a locally shaped participation programme. This is a Squash Dog proposal for Cumberland, with the community, site and delivery arrangements still to be developed.
We want to hear from people who may not already play, alongside existing coaches and clubs. New activity should complement local provision and valued public space.
Local priorities, practical proposals
How squash could contribute
Women and girls: a welcoming first step
Cumberland’s 2026 women’s cycling programme funded activities that encouraged women and girls to get active. Our proposed squash pathway would offer beginner groups, female coaches or hosts where available, loan equipment, and session times shaped around local needs. Participants should help decide how visible play, privacy, safety and a sociable welcome work together.
The council’s Age Friendly approach supports active lives and a stronger voice for older residents. We propose sociable daytime sessions, gradual introductions, seating and rest opportunities, and easy ways to enquire or book without a smartphone. Squash 57 and suitable squash balls offer different ways to enjoy a rally; the format should follow each person’s preferences and ability, rather than age alone.
Cumberland’s youth strategy places young people’s voices at the centre of service design. Schools, youth groups and families could help choose session times, activities and an affordable route back after a first visit. Coached introductions, loan equipment and supported progression would sit alongside parent, guardian or authorised-organisation involvement.
The Cumberland SEND and AP Partnership includes SENDAC and Unique Voices. We would seek local input from disabled adults, young people and carers on the whole journey: transport, step-free access, doors, toilets, seating, communication and sensory needs. Wheelchair and other adapted squash sessions would need suitable equipment, specialist input and an assessed court and surface.
We propose assessing an outdoor court in a visible, accessible location with useful everyday footfall and a responsible local host. A funded programme could combine squash with suitable stretching, yoga and social sessions, supported by coaching, housekeeping and maintenance. Weather protection, drainage, wind, glare, surface safety and an indoor fallback need assessment before choosing a site.
Start with community design sessions and a six-week coached trial at a suitable existing venue while comparing outdoor locations. A subsequent court deployment would depend on demand, access, permissions, an operator and funding for both installation and continuing activity. Measure first visits, return participation, barriers, cancellations and cost separately from public exposure; a court alone cannot guarantee health outcomes.
These are options to shape locally, not an available timetable. Facilities and formats remain supplier-neutral and subject to suitability, safety and operating resources.

The discussion so far
A Cumberland participation proposal
We have developed a project outline against Cumberland’s published wellbeing and inclusion priorities. Local residents, schools, community organisations and businesses are invited to help shape the programme.
Help shape the next step
Bring your local knowledge.
Schools, community groups, clubs and businesses can help us understand what people need and how a first activity could work.
You can share feedback, discuss possible involvement, suggest a host or explore sponsorship. An expression of interest helps shape the conversation; it does not commit you or your organisation to a programme.

Business and delivery
Support a useful programme
Businesses can explore funded access, equipment, coaching or practical expertise. We will develop a costed proposal around community priorities and continuing participation, with capital and running costs considered separately.
