A community-led launch
Missoula Community Squash led outreach and fundraising, working with the YMCA to bring squash to the city. US Squash records support from US Squash, Squash and Education Alliance, National Squash League and Open Squash; the YMCA and Harrow Rackets also provided in-kind support. The grand opening on 24 July included open play and junior clinics, followed by free community clinics.
Regulation-size, not a certification claim
The courts were described in the launch campaign and Squash Mad report as Montana’s first regulation-size courts. US Squash describes them as two outdoor squash courts. No evidence reviewed here establishes WSF court accreditation or tournament certification, so this page makes no such claim.
Squash in a shared community venue
The courts sit within the YMCA’s covered outdoor Airnasium, alongside basketball and pickleball activity. The YMCA says the Airnasium is open year-round during facility hours and that the community court areas are free during non-programmed hours. Membership includes open-gym access; day and month passes are available to non-members. Programmes and rentals can reserve the space, so visitors should check the current schedule and confirm that squash play is available.
A weather-protected outdoor model
The Airnasium is covered, not an exposed park court. It places squash in a multi-sport environment and can reduce weather disruption while sharing space and operating time with other activities. Squash-specific scheduling, ball and racket availability, supervision, court surface details and an accessibility assessment should be confirmed with the YMCA.
What Let’s Bounce can learn
The model combines a locally led fundraising coalition, an established community host, public non-programmed access and an all-ages launch programme. A comparable project would need to fund participation and operations as well as installation, agree how squash access coexists with other sports, and provide a clear path from open try-outs into sustained play.
Before you visit
Check with the local operator
The YMCA says the covered Airnasium is open year-round during facility hours and the community park areas are free during non-programmed hours. The current site gives facility hours of Monday to Friday 5am–10pm, Saturday 7am–8pm and Sunday 8am–6pm; programmes and rentals can reserve the space, and non-members can buy day or month passes. Check the YMCA schedule and confirm squash-specific access before travelling.
Let’s Bounce connects outdoor court ideas with local hosts, schools, coaches and appropriate sponsors. We can explore the place, participation programme and practical delivery together.
